St. Cloud State University has been sending students to what can be seen as its branch university in Alnwick Castle for nearly thirty years. The 2016 Summer of Art semester offers undergraduates a chance to live in Alnwick Castle in the town of Alnwick, England and study British culture, visual studio arts, communication studies and performance (including different LEP general education areas). Alnwick is a small, picturesque market town located five miles from the coast, just thirty minutes north of Newcastle and one hour south of Edinburgh.
The program fee covers airfare, room, meals five days per week, all field trip travel and entries including four nights in London.
Multiple studio art classes are available, as are communication studies and performance classes. Please refer to the Education Abroad page or Professors Jennifer Tuder and Justin Quinn for details. British studies courses count toward optional British Studies minor.
A major component of this semester abroad experience is the Friday field trip schedule that takes students to Hadrian's Wall, the Lake District, the Coastal Castles, Edinburgh, Holy Island and Berwick, Durham, London and more. Additionally, the one week break allows students to use Newcastle as a jumping-off place for inexpensive travel to England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Norway, Netherlands, Iceland ... places that our students have visited in the last couple of years! There's even a nighttime ferry that travels from Newcastle to Amsterdam for a quick weekend getaway. Travel!
